A pillar of European and cross-border university networks

The university has firmly embedded a European identity into its global engagement strategy. In 2024, it had the largest Erasmus+ budget in France, with over EUR 4 million in funding.

The EU's Erasmus+ programme is an initiative that supports education, training, youth and sport. The university has more than 390 Erasmus+ partners. In line with the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), the university focuses on digitalisation, inclusion, sustainability and education for European citizens. The programme enables a large number of students, and administrative and teaching staff to participate in international mobility programmes every year.

A pioneer in cross-border cooperation, the University of Strasbourg has been firmly rooted in the network of Upper Rhine universities through its participation in Eucor – The European Campus, a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) since 2015. This alliance aims to create a single, borderless scientific area in the Upper Rhine region, which is one of Europe’s most dynamic regions in terms of research and innovation.

In 2019, the University of Strasbourg was awarded funding through the European Universities Initiative and has since lad the European Partnership for an Innovative Campus Unifying Regions (EPICUR), which includes nine partners from seven European countries. EPICUR aims to transform practices and opportunities in education, research and technology transfer across its member universities. This ambition is based on shared values that are at the heart of the European project: academic freedom, sustainability, multilingualism, interculturality, equity, diversity and inclusion.

A European education

The university’s international strategy aligns with the priorities of the European agenda for the modernisation of tertiary education: fostering participation in European democratic life, supporting initiatives that address environmental challenges, promoting inclusion and diversity, and contributing to the digital transition.

The university encourages European mobility through more than 80 double- and triple-degree agreements with partner institutions across Europe. Its academic programmes include three Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programmes and the possibility to take online courses with other European universities.

The university offers numerous courses accredited by the Franco-German University (FGU), which supports over 500 students at the University of Strasbourg.

It is one of the founding members of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), whose mission is to defend and promote the values of high-quality tertiary education in an internationally competitive research environment.

It also participates in ambitious European projects, notably as part of the Horizon Europe programme, which funds research and innovation projects. A pioneer in EU law research, it has a Jean Monnet Module and Centre of Excellence. These initiatives aim to disseminate knowledge about the European Union through education and research.
